Jackson Glacier and Gunsight Lake

Jackson Glacier Overlook provides the clearest view of a glacier from Going-to-the-Sun road in Glacier National Park, and also hosts a number of trailheads towards the Southeast. This stunning view, with the long winter finally releasing its grasp - presents (L-R) Dusty Star Peak, Citadel Mountain, Mt. Jackson, and Fusillade Mountain under melting snow. The most notable feature of this area is the deep U-shaped valley, hollowed out by an Ice Age glacier. Each peak crests at over 8500 feet in height, and shelter two glaciers from this viewpoint. This landscape also presents itself as the starting point for the Gunsight Pass trailhead, one of the best short-duration backpacking trails anywhere.

Gunsight Lake is found at the upper reaches of the Gunsight Pass Trail, and is surrounded by supremely prominent peaks and glaciers. One of the most well travelled lakes in the park- this area has a large campground and stout trail network leading up towards Siksika Falls and Jackson Glacier, as well as Gunsight Pass. This large three-quarter mile long lake forms a large part of the tributary feeding magnificent Saint Mary Lake- and hosts magnificent colors at sunset nearly every day.
