Saint Mary Lake

This capture presents the well-known, often-visited, and devastatingly beautiful Saint Mary Lake from the Wild Goose Island Lookout in Glacier National Park. Saint Mary Lake is located on the east side of the park, and has its own dedicated entrance as the eastern terminus of the Going-to-the-Sun Road. I often considered this view to be one of my favorites in the park - and similarly to most locations in Glacier, photos can do no justice the majesty this 10-mile long lake holds. The tiny island in the middle is named Wild Goose Island, and is the lonliest island within the lake. The lake is flanked to the south (L-R) by Red Eagle Mountain, Mahtotopa Mountain, Little Chief Mountain, and Citadel Mountain. To the north, Goat Mountain and Going-to-the-Sun Mountain hold fast. Asleep under snow beyond the lake, lies Fusillade Mountain- one of the most striking peaks in the park. As with most lake water in the park, Saint Mary Lake is the largest which holds water of the spectacular aquamarine hue- a product of microscopic debris known as glacial till in the water refracting sunlight.
